The College is currently seeking a Associate Editor to provide editorial and document development support to the Managing Editor, Practice Activities, and the Managing Editor, Professional Publications.

Responsibilities

  • Provide editorial and administrative support to Managing Editor, Practice Activities and the Managing Editor, Professional Publications
  • Assist Managing Editors with revision of manuscripts in development and production (eg, Practice Bulletins, Committee Opinions, Obstetric Care Consensus, Technology Assessments, Task Force reports, grant-related documents, health records, and books)
  • Copy edit manuscripts for content, consistency, style, grammar/punctuation and proofread documents at each stage of development and production
  • Review manuscripts for consistency with ACOG guidelines; direct queries appropriately to staff, authors, or reviewers to resolve questions, clarify points, and obtain additional information requested by the Managing Editors
  • Resolve queries through follow-up or research; input corrections marked by others; write brief, descriptive abstracts for selected documents
  • Provide general administrative support to the Managing Editor, Practice Activities assist with special projects, and perform other duties as assigned; serve as the departmental contact and respond to routine phone and e-mail inquiries
  • Coordinate manuscript processing and tracking
  • Track manuscripts in development and production
  • Follow up to ensure that all materials are received in a timely fashion; request permission to borrow materials under copyright
  • Convert computer files from authors and outside departments; revise manuscripts to include preparation of technical and complex tabular material
  • Format manuscripts for production; coordinate manuscript for review and monitor progress with staff, members of the task forces, work groups or committees, and ACOG Fellows or consultants who are authors or reviewers of manuscripts in development or production
  • Arrange for and monitor reference verification through the Research Center and input final references into documents
  • Organize and retain computer files of manuscript revisions

Qualifications

  • Experience editing and proofreading, preferably medical, scientific, or technical publications; knowledge of medical terminology and AMA style preferred
  • Knowledge of computers, including Windows, MS Word, and Internet applications; experience with InDesign desirable
  • Good written and oral communication skills
  • Ability to work with multiple staff and ACOG members and consultants, to meet deadlines, and to handle a diverse work load
  • Ability to organize projects, provide administrative support, follow directions and complete assignments without supervision, show good judgment, and pay attention to detail
  • Flexibility to work on several projects at once. Bachelor’s degree required
  • Interest in women’s health care issues preferred
  • Experience in staffing committees with document development helpful
