The College is currently seeking a Patient Education Editor to provide editorial, research, administrative, and other services in the Patient Education department and assist in the development and production of print and online patient education materials. These materials include printed pieces (pamphlets, booklets, posters, tear pads) and online products (patient FAQs, fact sheets, infographics, other digital materials). The focus is on developing health communications for a consumer audience based on clinical guidelines.

 

Responsibilities

Patient Education Manuscripts

  • Copyedit manuscripts for style (ACOG, Chicago, and AMA), consistency, grammar, spelling, and suitability for a consumer audience; verify conformity of information with College policy and clinical guidelines.
  • Write select manuscripts as assigned by director.
  •  Assign select projects to freelancers.
  •  Send manuscripts to physician reviewers and manage the review process, incorporate edits.
  •  Use readability software to confirm reading level for consumers (6th to 7th grade).

Manuscript Production Process

  • Prepare manuscripts for production; proofread page proofs; review vendor proofs.
  • Track select manuscripts through the production process.

Manuscript Revisions

  •  Manage and track reprints and revisions of all patient education materials in collaboration with Publications and Sales.
  • Incorporate manuscript revisions; resolve queries; collect and organize reviewer comments; verify editorial changes.
  •  Ensure content is reviewed on a timely basis and consistent within the series and with other ACOG documents; maintain records of review, revision, and reprinting of documents; establish and maintain schedules of select projects in development.

Review Panel Communications

  • Organize and prepare materials for Patient Education Review Panel meetings; interact with panel members to set up travel arrangements; manage meeting preparation with in-house staff; assist director with preparation of minutes and with meeting follow-up.

Internal Communications

  •  Prepare status reports for Practice, Publications, Communications, and Sales; manage report database and input updated information as it becomes available.
  • Review Patient Education marketing email blasts and other materials developed by Marketing and Communications.
  •  Manage online corrections with Communications.
  • Attend Practice and other meetings as needed to stay abreast of developments that may impact Patient Education.

Other

  • Other duties as assigned, including possible travel to ACOG annual meeting.

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 3 years’ experience as a health communications writer/editor.
  • Strong written communication skills.
  • Experience managing multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to work independently with writers, editors, and physician reviewers.
  • Knowledge of website design and user experience a plus.
  • Experience using AMA and Chicago style.
  • Knowledge of medical nomenclature and terminology; familiarity with ob-gyn a plus.
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite and Microsoft OneDrive.
  • Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, English, or science writing; health communications or medical writing certificate a plus.
